Sloss, the Magic City
Sloss Furnaces, originally opened in 1880, is a National Historic Landmark located in Birmingham, Alabama. At one time, the Sloss Furnaces was the largest manufacturer of pig iron in the world. The site itself, left untouched and exposed to the elements since its closure in 1970, is not only a monument to the Industrial Revolution, but a reminder of how Birmingham earned its nicknamed "The Magic City" due to the influx of jobs to the area.
I discovered Sloss Furnaces in 2018, and have since returned multiple times. This ongoing project centers on the natural patina of the buildings and equipment and the rapport between man and machine.
